The grids are in accordance with the Directorate of Fisheries' requirements for primary safety, section 37, paragraph 3 of the Aquaculture Operations Regulations, which states:
Land-based aquaculture facilities must have a suitable device to prevent fish from escaping through the drain or in some other way. As a minimum, the device must consist of double protection or equivalent escape protection. It must be documented that other equivalent escape protection is at least as effective in preventing escape as double protection.
